Scope

Davbridge Constructions was engaged by Cairns Regional Council to build a new pedestrian bridge across Barr Creek in Cairns, linking Machans Beach and Holloways Beach. The project involved building a 140 m long, 5 m wide, fourteen span prestressed concrete pedestrian bridge. The foundations comprised 46 octagonal PSC piles, 550 mm across, with 881.5 m of pile supplied in 16.5 m and 20 m lengths, and restrike testing at 14 piers. The works were built from 480 m² of Bailey bridge staging. The works then covered about 194 m³ of in situ reinforced concrete in the substructure and erection of 63 PSC deck and kerb units, 400 mm deep, in 15 m and 10.6 m lengths, with 61 transverse stressing points and 126 hold down bolts. Additionally, the project required 352 m of pedestrian balustrade and 480 m² of deck surfacing. The project presented challenges such as building a long, narrow structure across the creek and its mangroves while protecting the surrounding environment. Located in Cairns in Far North Queensland, this project demonstrated Davbridge Constructions' ability to deliver long span pedestrian infrastructure in a sensitive coastal setting while maintaining environmental, community and safety standards.
