Scope
Davbridge Constructions was engaged by Rockhampton Regional Council to design and construct the new Gavial Creek Bridge from the council's concept design, and to refurbish the original Gavial Creek bridge and convert its fishing platform. The project involved building a new single lane, three span bridge, 65.5 m long, with a 34 m Super T centre span. The foundations comprised 550 mm octagonal PSC piles driven up to 25 m deep, with 446 m of pile driven in a tidal river 2 to 5 m deep. The works were built from a temporary Bailey bridge. The works then covered in situ pile caps, headstocks and kerbs, and a deck combining PSC units and Super T girders, including three 34 m girders of 73.1 t each, with about 368 t of precast in total. Additionally, the project required 395 m³ of rock protection, steel bridge barriers, XJS expansion joints and realigned approach roads. The project presented challenges such as driving piles and lifting heavy girders over a tidal river, while refurbishing the original bridge alongside the new one. Located in Rockhampton in Central Queensland, this project demonstrated Davbridge Constructions' ability to design and construct bridge infrastructure for regional councils while maintaining environmental, community and safety standards.
